San Francisco is a city that has been attracting talented musicians since the days of the gold rush. These days rents have made living in the city more of a struggle than it once was for the artistically inclined, but luckily that doesn’t mean you can’t find great music in a number of SF bars on any given night. When the mood strikes, and you’re in need of some great live tunes, check out any of these spots for a guaranteed great night.
Club Deluxe: In the mood for the winning combination of delicious pizza and free jazz? Then you can’t go wrong with Club Deluxe. Don’t forget to tip your performers!
The Plough and The Stars: There’s nothing like a good old fashioned pub for enjoying your live music with cold beer and wood paneling.
Amnesia: Another great spot for good beer and free music, you can take your pick of bluegrass, jazz, or whatever else is on the calendar at Amnesia. Be forewarned though, the regulars at Amnesia know how to dance (but don’t let that intimidate you!)
Boom Boom Room: When you know you’re going to want to get up and dance, the Boom Boom Room is a fantastic go-to. Make sure to check out the recurring “Soul Train Revival” night.
Tupelo: Like having soul food and karaoke options thrown into your live music menu? Tupelo serves up both, in addition to a variety of other musical options- plus its close in proximity to Golden Boy Pizza (definite bonus points).
The Milk Bar: A great spot to support local and upcoming artists, the Milk Bar has plenty of room to get down in the back, and a photo booth up front- so you won’t forget any of the memories you make during the night.
